Kookas A vs Pirates A: 5 -7
In an incredibly well fought game today, the Kookas came out with a fighting spirit despite having depleted numbers. The valiant Tomma (sporting a slightly busted ankle, slightly sore knee and a bit of a cold) stepped into goals and made some stirling saves, and she kept grinning throughout. What a trooper!
The first Kookas goal of the game came to our latecomer Sallae (who says that the swiss are known for punctuality?). All was forgiven as soon as he put one in the net though. It certainly took a bit of the sting out of the two previous Pirates goals. Just to spice things up a bit, our favourite Pirate Arvid put his foot (or was it his elbow) in it and shoved Patty. BEEEP! TWO MINUTES BUDDY!
Second period started out a little better for us with Tim Singer scoring a beauty, assisted by Cambo. It must have stung Arvid a bit more as he managed to attract yet another two minutes for pushing. Not his day really! It was definitely Singer's day as he managed another goal with 3 minutes to go and no assistance was required :). Just as the seconds ticked down on the clock though, Pirates pulled back to a one goal lead.
The third period started quite strong for pirates with a couple of goals earlier on, but as the minutes ticked down, the team pulled back two goals in quick succession - first an own goal (so thanks, unnamed pirate for that), and another blinder from Sallae from the halfway line. Not to be outdone though, after both teams taking a time out, the pirates snuck another one in with 27 seconds on the clock. Unfortunately, the boys just ran out of time. Touka from Pirates was awarded 2 points and Cambo 1 point by the ref.
Pirates B vs Kookas B: 4-2
Another valiantly fought game today. The team was asked to be switched on from the first minute, and after just 4, Jason Slattery scored a lovely goal with an assist from Fi. Given the heat and the poor condition of the court, the B's decided to play it tight, and it paid off for the next ten minutes. The pirates managed to claw one back in the 6th minute but the period finished with no other goals.
Second period started similar to the first, with Kookas making their presence known and putting lots of pressure on the pirates. A superb attempt on goal by Richard turned into an assist as Sean managed to get the rebound in. A minute later, you would have thought Pirates player 85 had just won the world cup - he put a goal in whilst almost decapitating the players around him and let such a triumphant roar that everyone seemed quite stunned. Someone should perhaps keep him away from the Red Bull in future! The period ended 2 - 2, with the pirates captain ironically complaining about shoving. That's ok, we both agreed to keep our players in check...right? Defence was tight in this period, and we rallied superbly.
Third period started off ok - nothing too drastic - then our jittery caffeine addict number 85 decided to have a bit of a wobbler behind Kookas net. Mike Z and Katy went in to try and get the ball off the back of the goals, when this guy started pushing and shoving like he was having a fit - which subsequently meant the goal got shoved and stuck on Aaren's helmet, which meant as he tried to stand and get free, he threw the goal and it landed on Katy's arm! Crazy times! With no apology forthcoming, there was nothing left to do but take the lumps and try to get on with things. It seemed to unsettle the brave band of kookas though, and after yet another over the top triumphant goal scoring whoop (and a massive crack across the hands for Aaren), people were getting annoyed. With 12 seconds to go (how did we end up going from 6 minutes to this so quickly?), a radical 6 player all-or nothing was attempted, but unfortunately, one slipped into the open net. Although the outcome was not the best, it seemed a quite tight bunch out on the court and we kept our heads up through 2 short hand penalties. Surprisingly crazy 85 got 2 votes, but not surprisingly, Nicole Arrold got 1 for some stirling defensive work.
This week sees three of our Kookas heading off to World Champs, with a further Kooka already over there and getting prepared. Good luck to Teresa Annese, Jill Roberts, Fiona Wainwright and Leith Woods, and to all the Aussie girls.
